Adding Alt Text to Your Images

The term alt text is short for “alternative text.” In all technicality, it stands for an attributed used in HTML code. The information encoded in the tags describes the appearance or function of an image on the page.

These are sometimes known as “alt attributes” or “alt descriptions.”

If you’re working in the back end of your website, you can add them to the HTML code any time you have an image. Inside the “img src” tag, you’ll add “alt=” before closing the tag.

Following the alt tag, you’ll add your description in quotation marks.

It also doesn’t provide unnecessary information, like what color the stock market ticker is. Provided it doesn’t overlap with your caption, this alt text would score some pretty good points.

If your keyword isn’t “Bitcoin” or “stock market,” though, you may have a harder time ensuring your keywords are in the alt text.

You have two choices here. One is to reconsider your image choice. If you can’t get the keyword in the alt text, is the image relevant to your content?

The other is to leave your keyword out of the alt text. It’s better to describe the image accurately than to try and stuff a keyword into the alt text.

Avoid stuffing keywords into alt text.

Form Buttons and Text as an Image

If you use an image as a button anywhere on your site, be sure to include alt text. Otherwise, people may not know to click it or what it will do.

You should also avoid making text into images. It’s not recommended to put up a picture of a letter, for example, because the screen reader can’t read it.

If you do need to provide text as an image, include a long description or a plain-text copy of it for accessibility.
